Yea, no reservation here, but cant see myself showing up much earlier than 6 or 630.

How have previous launches gone there? I saw the ipad line and it looked long and slow :(

The reservation line for the ipad went really fast, the non-reservation one was slower. I haven't been to any iPhone launches though - they will definitely move slower because of the activation.

Lets say what you're suggesting is correct in some situations with some video. Even with double the bandwidth we're only talking about 6-8MB. Until recently I had a 100mbit local network but I upgraded to gigabit via PCI card. My 100mbit performance was regularly at 9.7 - 11.4MB/sec with cat5e.

In conclusion.. although the ibook could never play an HD video itself it could easily host it on even a "slow" 100mbit network.

I didn't say anything about the iBook being able to play HD video.
I didn't say the iBook couldn't host HD video.

How is this even racist? It's on almost every news site related to japan tsunami/earthquake.

I'm not making fun of the Japanese. I'm talking about the ipad scalpers. Karma is a real bitch I guess.

I like it very much. I can imagine sets of polls that you can vote for fun, and then your results are summarized in your profile. Think of the way Arn always starts a thread after Apple media events evaluating which rumors were true and which were not. Instead of just doing that after the events, there could be a set of questions and everyone would have a chance to make their bets.

    One thumbs up from me.

Congrats mate! You'll love it - a tiny, silent, power-efficient computer that can do pretty much everything you can throw at it. Mine's been on and running 24/7 for the better part of the last two years, and has yet to have a single issue. Here's hoping yours delivers performance just as long!

With greenpois0n, what exactly happened? The first time I tried it, there was a point at which text was scrolling down the screen and then it stopped for several minutes with what appeared to be a serious error message, at which point I panicked and rebooted. When I tried again, I waited it out at that point in the process, and eventually the scrolling continued and the jailbreak completed. I don't know if the current revision of greenpois0n does that; I think I was using the previous one.

    That was the MacUpdate bundle

You can get MacDVDRipper Pro or RipIt to make your rips (minimal costs)
Or you can use MacTheRipper (still works, free, but older)

But to encode you will want something like Handbrake (free)
You can use it VLC to go direct from from DVD to encoding

I prefer to rip and then encode

Thanks for the quick reply, but think im even more confused. lol

Not very great with computers !

So i have to download something to rip it , then something else to encode it . Is it easy or a pain in the ass ??

So I keep getting this error while playing an assortment of vids on my new mac pro in quicktime. The video plays for a random amount of time, but eventually the video freezes while the audio remains playing. If I try to force quit the entire system then freezes until a hard reset. Here is the error message from the console every time it happens "/Applications/QuickTime Player.app/Contents/MacOS/QuickTime Player[8855]: AVF error: Gen6IntelGVAQueryAVDCommandStatus, TimeOut. Resetting." I am not having much success searching for this error on the boards or google. Anyone have any idea what is going on with this?

    Same issue here...
2011 MBP. DP2 ran fine. The first DP2 Update did also work w/o a flaw. Just applying the last update destroyed and the Book freezes during the boot process as stated above.
    Gonna reinstall DP2...
Really kind of lame this issue... but hell...it's a Dev Preview... things like that can happen...

Pkgbackup has two options for storing the backup info - your local address book or Dropbox. Dropbox has the advantage of being immune to having Apple tweak the data format of the address book entries which can corrupt your backup data.

Perhaps I'm not being totally fair here, but he strikes me as an example of a species of internet parasite who achieves some measure of success and fame on the back of someone else's work. A more famous (or infamous) example is potty-mouthed moron Julie Powell, whose 15 minutes of fame--achieved on the back of Julia Child's classic cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking--culminated in a major Hollywood movie about her life starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams!

In this case, Merlin has built a successful blogging, writing and speaking career based largely on David Allen's Getting Things Done (GTD) methodology for personal organization and productivity. He jumped in early, starting his 43Folders blog in just two years after Allen published GTD. His focus has been on applying GTD methodology to technology work, and on developing tools to aid in the implementation of GTD. Unlike Julie Powell, whose efforts reportedly earned the disdain of Julia Child, I've seen no signs of animosity between David Allen and Mr. Mann. Perhaps Allen is happy to have the extra evangelization of his approach.

You'd have to be fairly close to them for more than a brief encounter and the radiation dissipates after awhile. Not only that, they'd have to get fairly large doses in the first place to emit much radiation.

I think the real concern would be not so much the animals themselves. For an animal to represent a real exposure risk, it would probably have to be so "hot" that it would not live very long at all, nor would anything that were to eat it. It is about the contaminated material they might pick up and carry away from Fukushima. Each creature just has to bring us a very small amount, enough of them in concert, over time, could in theory make our cities, or parts of the, uninhabitable. Not sure what we could do to prevent it.

Ahh bus-powered is the term I was looking for. Thank you for all the informative replies, much appreciated.

Just some final questions.. is there any advantage to using a outlet-powered HD over a portable bus-powered HD? And how much difference will I notice between a 5400RPM and a 7200RPM drive? The difference in size would be 250GB, since OWC only sells up to 750GB at 7200RPM, is it really worth the speed?

Heck, is there a reason to use a portable? Now that I'm thinking about it, it's convenient, but maybe unnecessary. What are you guys using? Bus-powered or outlet?

I don't know technically if there is an advantage of powered HDD's over bus powered HDD's, but I feel better with a powered drive knowing that I am not over-taxing my USB ports with added load.

You will notice a measurable but not extravagant difference in performance in a 7200RPM HDD over the 5400RPM HDD.

Only you can decide if the trade off in speed over capacity is worth it.

I have a few powered HDD's that I use for Time Machine backups, and I do not carry them around. They stay in one place 99% of the time. Therefore I have no need for a more portable storage device other than my laptop itself. Again, this is a decision only you can make because it comes down to personal preference. There are many options available to you no matter which way you decide.

I guess if I am running into a lot of situations where I will actually NEED a portable I can always switch. Most of the time I don't do any video editing without a power source since it eats up my batteries anyways.

Many thanks, I appreciate it. I opted for a 1TB plug powered drive by OWC :)

You may be able to tether. I've personally used a Sony Ericsson W705a - which does not require any third-party drivers - but there are likely plenty of other devices that can be used out of the box.

whats the point of waiting, when you could begin enjoying the best operating system in the world. :D

i switched earlier this year, and i have not even looked back. seriously.
i was a little upset thinking that my new purchase would be out dated in a year when i initially
read about the whole intel switch, but what ever, thats technology for you and blue velvet makes a very valid point too.

besides, when longhorn (or what ever it's called now) is released your peecee will be dated too.

    i say go for it!
