You certainly ain't the only one. Obvious troll is obvious.

i thought this from my first post, but his join date is 08, and he's a regular. that is what has me thinking that what he is saying is really how he thinks/acts.

Well its well known with Apple hardware to never buy the first generation of any new platform. The current MBA were a significant enough change from the previous to be known as a gen 1 all over again. Especially when we knew SB was around the corner. Still they are great as is.

It's also well known that that kind of thinking is complete nonsense. If I thought that way, I never would have bought:

    iPad 1
    iPad 2
    iPhone 4
    Apple TV 2

    To name a few.
Those are all great products that I'm enjoying trouble free thank you.

If everybody thought like that, Apple would cease to exist.

A news report suggested that the back-to-school rush has been the reason for the macbook specific shortages. Indications are the macbook won't be updated with Core 2 Duo until a later time, but could be as early as the end of September. I would guess we won't see C2D macbooks this month at least though. MBP's on the other had will hopefully, and should be shipping within the next 2 to 3 weeks.

Yeah, this is definitely another possibility to consider - the MacBooks and MacBook Pros are not necessarily going to be updated with Merom simultaneously. Perhaps only the MBPs will be updated for now, with the MacBooks following a few weeks later.

As many others have said, only time will tell - luckily it's a relatively short period of time. ;)

Agreed. I've never understood why macs have such large bezel's. The 11" MBA is a notable offender in particular, since because the laptop is so small, the wide bezel looks even more immense compared to the rest of the laptop.

I think it has allot to do with the need to make the edges of the case thicker for stability. Look at the Air's internals from Apple's video. It clearly shows thicker edges that likely preclude the LCD from reaching all the way over. For Apple to reduce the Bezel entirely, the case would need to be thicker overall to maintain comparable rigidity - unless they built it of something stronger than aluminum...

what is the point of an IPS screen with a low resolution? IPS is good for viewing angles but people rarely look at a laptop from extreme viewing angles. the color and contrast on the current mbp screen are pretty good right now.

I'm sorry, the IPS is very useful if you happen to be three people wide watching a movie on your monitor. I know, it's sad, but many of us do not have televisions. That being said, I notice very little difference in viewing angle fidelity from my 24" ACD with IPS and my 2008 MBP, which presumably is a TN.

Wow, I'm really impressed by all these people hoping for Liquid Metal. I'm wondering what they think that is, this "Liquid Metal". I bet they think it's something really cool, something that is completely different from anything that humankind has ever used in manufacturing (I mean, I read something like "Black Liquidmetal" in this thread. Wtf?). But truth is, if you held something in your hands made of Liquid Metal you wouldn't even notice the difference between that and anything made of aluminium, steel or any other shiny metal. It may be a very exciting new material for metallurgists or chemists but the consumer will probably just notice that it is a bit more durable and scratch resistant than aluminium (if at all, more likely in direct comparison only). It's the same thing as carbon. When I bought my first bike with carbon forks I was like "Holy crap this is real carbon, I bet this will change my life forever". In fact, it was just the same. Neither did it have a special feel to it. It felt like plastic, not very trustworthy. I liked how it reduced the weight (it was 15% lighter than my old bike all in all), but seriously, it wasn't a big deal after I got used to it. It will be the same with liquid metal. It has a fancy name and everything but for the enormous price of the material it has no use for the consumer whatsoever. It will also have traces of fingerprints on it, it will also get scratchy after some time and so on. Sure, it will take a longer time till it looks used, but nobody will think "This Notebook looks really bad. But hey, if it was made of aluminium it would have looked this way like two months ago. God, I'm so glad it's made of Liquid Metal instead".

Do you honestly think people can't tell the difference between aluminum and steel. The metals are very different. The benefit of the liquidmetal is not in the feel per se but the strength to weight ratio. Like titanium. It is a premium for outdoor cookware because its as strong a steel but light as aluminum. If the MBP's are going to get much smaller then they need less of a body - liquidmetal would help. Also, if you've every dropped your laptop then having it bounce back would be nice.

I came to the opposite conclusion....

Running many compute-bound single-threaded benchmarks and apps - I saw how NT (pre Win2k) would balance across CPUs (that is, a "100%" compute-bound job would show each CPU running at 50%).

However, setting affinity so that one CPU was 100% and the other was 0% had no significant effect on the run times. (And by "significant" I mean statistically significant - I literally ran hundreds of runs in each configuration.)\\

By the way, with Win2k3 (and XP 64-bit, really the same system) you see much less "balancing" - a single-threaded app will stick to a CPU for much longer.

I suspect if any observable difference occurs depends upon the application, dataset, etc.

I'm guessing the 50% "balanced" method was done to try and keep a single CPU from heating up too much, and with the advent of multicore systems, it probably no longer matters which core is generating the heat due to them being in a single package.

It could also be MS found that certain circumstances (like mine) resulted in improvements in processing.

    Interesting stuff.

I'm not sure that this is an entirely novel thought, but I thought I would test my psychic abilities a little.

The mac mini seems like the target for movies here, not iPods. There's a lot of talk about Airport express and how that might be the killer hardware, but there's more to it than that. Apple is competing against rental stores and netflix to watch movies. No one is just going to want to watch movies on an iPod, they are going to want it on they're TV. So why not have a network box that saves and plays the movies that is attatched to your TV? The mini is already positioned to do exactly that. No keyboard or monitor, maybe just a remote to run Front Row.

Download the movie to the mini, watch it on TV at your convenience. Mac video on demand. Start doing that with TV shows and all of a sudden, Tivo has got a serious contender, too.

The hard bit will be having full-quality movies sent to your home, VOD style.

The new iPod is a phone. There may be a video ipod, but I doubt that it's a main target for the movies.

I have this wonderful feeling that it'll be even cooler than this, but this is what I am expecting.

    Dr. Z.

I don't usually read SLA's, but it's all right there, Page 1, Section 4, subsection b. And if don't want your iPhone to collect this data, turn off the feature.

    http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iphone4.pdf

http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iPadSoftwareLicense.pdfAs you said, we've all agreed to it. Here is the appropriate paragraph for the iPad, for those who didn't bother to check the links

    Section 4.b

    (b) Location Data. Apple and its partners and licensees may provide certain services through your iPad that rely upon location information. To provide these services,
where available, Apple and its partners and licensees may transmit, collect, maintain, process and use your location data, including the real-time geographic location of
your iPad. The location data collected by Apple is collected in a form that does not personally identify you and may be used by Apple and its partners and licensees to
provide location-based products and services. By using any location-based services on your iPad, you agree and consent to Apple's and its partners' and licensees'
transmission, collection, maintenance, processing and use of your location data to provide location-based products and services. You may withdraw this consent
at any time by not using the location-based features or by turning o! the Location Services setting on your iPad. Not using these features will not impact the non locationbased functionality of your iPad. When using third party applications or services on the iPad that use or provide location data, you are subject to and should review such
third party's terms and privacy policy on use of location data by such third party applications or services.

So is it dumb for Apple to ignore a market of people such as myself? Yes.

I think the big problem with rentals is that Netflix has it wrapped up right now. You can get a ton of movies for a monthly fee, and I don't see any way an online service can compete with that, at least not without losing money on it.

If you know your best effort won't compare well to Netflix, does it really make sense to try and do it anyway? Or is it smarter just to stay out of such a cutthroat marketplace?

I have a imac late 2009 and Im very very happy with it. I dont need a bigger screen, I dont need more resolution, I dont need more disk space, I dont need thunderbolt or USB 3, I dont need Lion, I dont need more RAM, I dont need better graphics...

I dont plan on buying a new imac until they come with USB 3 and thunderbolt and SSD inside and, who knows, bluray...

Right now theres just absolutely no need to change. Only option I want is the next macbook air with core i3, since I dont have a laptop and I need one. Ill have to wait until November or so. It wouldnt be smart to buy it now since the next update sure with have core i3 and thunderbolt and 4GB RAM.

Oh God yes this is what I want.

I've read where iTunes 7 supports multiple libraries, but it's not the solution we're waiting for.

I want to rip a CD onto my powerbook and have iTunes sync it with a master library on a partition of my external drive next time I hook it up. Right now, I'd have to remember to copy the new files onto the external... no good—I want it to be automatic and just work (Apple has spoiled me).

It's called 'rsync', and it's one of the BSD utilities built into OS X.

If you either have a really small library, or money to burn (on .Mac and the storage upgrade; but even then, only up to 4 GB,) you could use .Mac as your library storage, and just have Automatic iDisk sync turned on.

edit: I know I saw something about how to trick your computer into thinking another computer on your network is the .Mac server, which would let you use all of the current .Mac functions hosted locally; this would work great for an 'iDisk-hosted' library. As long as you don't ever connect to a different internet connection, and it tries to sync with the real iDisk.

Are there any Thuderbolt devices yet?

Yes ... it is called MacBook Pro. If you climb outside of the typical PC mentality of just added peripherals with higher data rates (you'll eventually get that) ... the bigger issue is in using the light weight, very mobile, long battery life Airs to do the initial creative input on the road ... then link them back to the big, high power computers to finish up the heavy rendering and post production work. Look at the refresh on Final Cut Pro. Look at Adobe's latest offerings ... all with leaning toward iOS. You'll like see a 30 pin adapter for iPad2 and above with thunderbolt out so they can be used as well. Apple is planning on selling more of its offerings and are speeding up the data exchange rates on high performance operations.
As apple goes cloud backup the need for high data transfer rates goes way up.
The bottle neck right now is the carriers both in speed and cost.

You're also the guy that will wreck his car because I force you to, and you're also the guy that I will then sue to pay for my deductible and any applicable medical costs. And I'm the guy that will laugh in your face and say "gonna move for me next time?" as I walk out of court and you cut me a check.

I'm sorry, but if you're the guy that goes 70mph in the fast lane and refuses to move, you are at fault for what ever I chose to dish out to you, for not having the common courtesy to move your car.

And your ethics take an even worse.
The system is clearly broken and you are living proof of it.
