Sophos has quite a low detection rate in comparison to some others in my experience, but it's a solid AV, and one can't fault what's free.

Cingular is by far the worst cell carrier in terms of customer service and I will never go back to them (nor will they have me back, I suspect). If true, it's too bad Apple decided to go this route instead of just providing a selection of phone types like Palm with the Treo. With the Treo, you can get a Sprint, Verizon, Cingular or unlocked phone so everyone who wants one can have it.

The worst part about this being for Cingular is that they will NEVER let you unlock the phone and who knows if Apple will do it for you (I HIGHLY doubt it). I tried and they gave me the run around about not unlocking the phone because it could allow malware from other phone networks to get on their phones. That's a load of BS.

This really stinks since I'm tired of having a huge Treo, eventhough it's a great phone, and smaller phones just don't have the features. I was hoping that Apple's offering would be the perfect compromise. I guess instead of getting our underware in a bundle, we might as well sit back and wait until the iPhone is release... if it's ever released.

I'd disagree based on the last demo by intel.

Thunderbolt uses DisplayPort 1.1a which is not as good as DisplayPort 1.2 already found in some GPUs.

He quoted that number on a 5M connection...is that what you have?

Pfff, who knows. The quality of our local DSL service has gone to crap lately. I would have thought in theory I should be getting 3M, but in reality, it's been pretty slow lately. It doesn't help that the DSL company I'm with now is one that I was dumped with because the one I had originally subscribed to went out of business. I would switch, but I'm not hearing very good things from neighbors with other companies...

But my point is that Steve talked about 30-minute downloads as if to say that this is what your average user can expect. Sure, some of you can do that. But those of us with crappy DSL/cable (or even.. gasp! dialup!) are not in a place yet where large movie downloads are convenient.

I was credit card in hand when these were released, but I stopped myself. I'd like to wait a bit and see the 64 bit boost (if there is any), and Leopard in general.

I feel like these are speed demons, but I can't take advantage of a lot of it due to my heavy use of CS2 and the in-between feeling of Apple's apps/OS right now.

The second Leopard is out, I'm on the 24" iMac train.

Yea, I know what you mean. Apple needs to get on the ball with that already. They have been shipping dual core machines for a while yet OS X cant truly take advantage of it. Since intel will be using more cores as time goes by it only makes sense for OS X and it's apps to be able to harness the full power of all the cores/processors. I really really hope thats what they have planned for Leopard. Maybe its one of the " Super Secret Features" ???

Windows user here for at least a decade. This is obviously propaganda to promote some sort of upcoming suite of software for OSX to prevent "viruses" lol. Yawn. I am right now on my Windows box as I don't have a Mac at the moment but I have owned several. The only way your Mac can be infected with anything is through stupidity.

If this is a product called showtime, that could be a Bad Thing (tm). A media application that has the same name as the movie channel? Sounds like grounds for a trademark lawsuit to me. Mighty Mouse is a little harder to cause consumer confusion: one's an computer mouse, the other is a cartoon character. But a movie software application and a movie channel? hmmmmm....
I don't think there will be anything with that name.

Apple did just very recently file for a new iMovie trade mark in Europe, through Italy. They already had the name registered in 2000/2001. This new application is from 22 August, and no real details are currently published.

I think this is totally feasible, but one question that many of you haven't addressed is: "Do you see this interaction and interface happening for the Windows users?"

I know we're all Apple fans here, but in order for the iTunes Movie Store to be successful, it will have to include "them."

    w00master

that's the question of course :) maybe it will be the killer application to convert windows users to mac :p

or windows users can connect their pc's to a tv with a few cables, so that they also can play the movies from the movie store on their tv's… but in that case the pc must be next to the tv.

Had this security guard done nothing and instead hide in a corner somewhere like most of you would, I could only imagine some of the comments you guys would post.

security guards in general get so much heat from the general population. Armed guards are there to protect life and property. they don't respond like they should in these situations, they aren't doing their job. Most guards, don't do their job and this is why they get ridiculed. this guard does his job and you get people saying things like "security guards shouldn't carry guns, OMG"

Rent-a-cops have guns? And shoot people IN THE HEAD? I'm amazed.

pretty amazing huh? I use to do armed security. Sometimes when I do duty without a gun, I'd get all kinds of wise-ass side remarks about being a rent a cop. when I carried my gun, I got nothing but respect. the "rent-a-cop" remarks stopped. or maybe they just said it very low so I couldn't hear. Not sure why, I am not going to shoot anyone for an insult :D

and yes, if my life or those I am working to protect are threatened by you, this "rent-a-cop" would shoot you in order to save my life or those around me. No questions asked.

    How sad,
I mean a person lost his life because of his actions, and the guard now has to live with the fact that he took a life.
when you take your permit to carry a gun, they make it a point NOT to get your permit if you are not emotionally capable of handling taking someone's life. You don't wear a gun for show, you wear it for protection. if you come from the mentality that you could never shoot someone, even if your own life or those around you in is in danger, then leave your gun at home and pick a different job.

I'm sorry but those guys deserved it. Why should the mall guard have to wait until his life in in danger before putting someone else's life in danger?
it's the law, otherwise you open up yourself to be thrown in jail or face a civil lawsuit. the judge has to see that without a reasonable doubt, your life was in danger and you did what was needed in order to protect it or protect the life of those around you.

it's a judgement call you have to make and sometimes it's not an easy one to make because there are so many variables. Having an adrenaline rush and chaos all around you, makes it very easy to make mistakes. such as shooting a suspect as he is running away. missing shots and hitting bystanders. Pulling the trigger preemptively and killing someone without a "real" threat.

the messed part is that armed security guards, don't get the same type of protection police get. Had this been a police shooting, I bet half of these responses would be different.

    Safari!
    False.
How would Safari be able to install that stuff? Forgive me for not knowing, but I haven't seen anything that allowed you to install software, or any executable code, from iOS Safari. Not with Apple's model. Maybe jailbroken, but that's a different story.

According to MacWorld, they originally reported the date as the 24th, but have corrected their article and it is the 25th.

Not a huge deal, just clarifies that there will not be an Apple Special event then a seperate event at Photokina.

--HGDo we have an exact hour the event will be held. Because it's at least 8 maybe 10 hours later in Germany than it is in San Francisco. So that would be helpful. I haven't had time to read teh whole thread.

I think it will be Aperature 2 UB and the MBP launch. 2.33GHz C2D 17" with easy HD access and swap outs.

So I guess it's eleven more days for Apple to keep buildin' 'em and stackin' 'em on up and dispersin' 'em throught the planet so we can TROUNCE on 'em that fateful Monday morning when Apple starts sellin' 'em.! :p

Just like all of the netbooks with optical drives make the MBA look bad?

Netbooks do not have optical drives. Ultraportables do.

The MBA looks good as a netbook. It looks bad as an ultraportable.

MBA and MBP are two different markets.

MBA is for people that want light. MBP is for people that want a full featured notebook.

So you want a big MBA.

If they could have the same processors, that would happen already at 13".

You can go to church and pray instead of going to court, if you'd like, but for those of us that believe in the legal system, we take solace in the fact that things really aren't black and white, and yet there is a framework in place that let's us try and figure these things out.

Congratulations on responding cogently to the trollish insults from 'aristotle' (a strange choice of name given his beliefs and style of argument).

It is not "streaming" the icon data, it is copied over and displayed superimposed on another icon which is presumably an internal OS X bundle.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about here, and I see you've now shifted the argument over to app icons rather than computer images. App icons are also used in many many places outside of an app - if they are used to portray that app in some way, most people see that as fair.

Following your argument to its logical conclusion, Apple is infringing by using icons in the dock, or the display of running applications, and many other desktop apps which use the icon of another program for informational purposes are also infringing other people's copyright. I'd call that fair use, and useful for the customer as well, most developers would agree.

It's possible some copyright troll could try to sue someone for it, as in spite of your protestations, it is a grey area, however I feel as a customer and developer that it is wrong for Apple to abuse their position of power and try to dictate petty little rules like this to developers. The development experience on the iPhone is great, but having experienced the approval process for iPhone, I can say it is an unmitigated failure, on its own terms. That is all.

PS Please stop trying to argue about law with a lawyer, and trying to claim the English legal system (which has nothing to do with this judgment) is based on 'Judeo-christian' law - it is not.

I'm not going to defend Apple because NO BODY on this forum knows the exact circumstances of the situation.

Given the myriad other examples of Apple's woeful treatment of app store developers, I think it's fair to discuss this one as yet another example of them messing their developers around. It also has important consequences for Apple and iPhone users.

By getting press coverage, by being ejected, they have got what they wanted: To raise awareness of their cause.

In addition, the british press just LOVE to bring down a sucessful person/product/brand... brace yourselves for a lot of anti-apple press, now everyone knows how un-green apple are.

I was there today, and was offered a leaflet, and an organic apple, on leaving olympia tube station. They do have a valid point...

It hurt when I saw my work arrange for a broken tangerine iMac to be taken to the tip, when Dell came personally to take their broken PC...

I love apple, they could do more than simply offer to recycle their PACKAGING! Finish the job Apple. (We pay enough for the privelige)

Edit: Apple can you also put a spell check into Safari please :)

looking forward to an Australian deal. Hopefully it will be someone cheap like Virgin - they are "hip and trendy" (at least I think they are...)

hah, they portrayed as that over in Australia too? I love Virgin Mobile for their brochures and other literature covered with cheeky comments.

Yea Sim Free is the only way I'd get an iPhone. No way in hell am I giving up my 7 year old phone number. Sim free, stick in my ancient Virgin Mobile sim card and BAM. We have a winner.

Any idea what kind of "top-secret" features Leopard could support for iPhone?
    Let your imaginiations run wild!

I can imagine the iPhone playing these new iPod games. makes total sense. but that's the limit of my imagination for now ;)

An .exe is an executable, not an application. Some people may have called them applications, but not MS. Never. Until now.

    Never? Until now?

    Please!

exe's were refered to as applications for over a decade. As has been demonstrated in THIS thread may times already.

Of course, what did you expect from an interface designed for keyboards, joysticks, and mice?

Even USB 2.0 has a pathetic 50% effective utilization rate, while Firewire is ~95%. USB 2.0 is 480 Mb/s, which equals 60 MB/s, yet in real world speeds, you're lucky if you see 30 MB/s - HALF it's rated bandwidth. USB is just plain horrible for bulk data transfer, and the new 3.0 iteration is no different. The protocol overhead is atrocious.

Of course USB also operates in slow horrible PIO mode, meaning it has to run everything through the host CPU. PATA, SATA, SCSI, Firewire, and Thunderbolt all operate in DMA mode, bypassing the host CPU for much much faster transfers.

PATA has PIO modes too... You just have to work (or use a poopy old HD) to get it to turn on.

With the competition getting ready to ship Core 2s I think this is where Apple is going on the 12th. Their inventories will be worked down with back to school buying and they are not going to let the competition get that far ahead of them.

On the iPod situation, if you are looking at a Palm type enhancement then I think it will be based on a stripped down version of OS X, allowing Apple to do a good job with iCal, some of iLife, Address Book, etc. The benefit of the partial OS X is that 3rd party developers who have come up with some very good apps could migrate them to an iPod version with (hopefully) relative ease. That could generate some excitement in the market that would also leave MS in the dust with their MP3. Could be very interesting - and would also explain the delay in releasing new models.

On the movie side, I would look for a feature that allows you to move an actual DVD to the video iPod. Would be great for long flights when going on a business trip - especially if you're in cattle car with not enough room to open your notebook.

I got my Mac connected to some great speakers.
Now, a friend comes by for a visit, brings along his laptop and we want to hear some music from his iTunes --> messy cables, my friend standing with his laptop by the amplifier because that cable is short (…)

Ever heard of Home Sharing? If you read carefully through this thread, you might even come across it. As long as you connect your friend's laptop to your WiFi network, you access its iTunes library through Home Sharing from your Mac.

Another friend comes over. We want to listen to music from his/her iPod/iPhone/iPad --> messy cables.

Simply connect his or her iOS device or iPod to your computer with the standard sync cable (keeps it charged at the same time), and you can access its content from your Mac.

All this could be accomplished with a few airport express units across the house which is somehow a luxury option money-wise and somehow redundant since I already have a wireless router and at least one computer up and running.
So, Airport Expresses are luxury but other WiFi routers onto which an Airplay hack could be installed are not luxury?
You can rightfully slam Apple for not including Airplay into the Time Capsule and Airport Extreme but that is about it.

And for those suggesting third-party software, this sounds great if I were the only using them. I cannot imagine telling my friends "hey, buy this $40 software so we can stream music to each other's computer". I'm not sure I could even convince them to install free software to mess with their audio setup.

To stream between computers, you only need iTunes and Home Sharing, which is, btw, free. And you now welcome/wish for a third-party hack to stream music and then in the same breath say that installing even bonafide software like the free Airfoil Speakers or iTunes is out of the question. What is it, you could convince your friends to install a third-party hack on their computers but not iTunes or Airfoil?
