Interesting coincidence. I just got off the line with someone who just told me how her brother was killed 2 weeks ago in a car wreck. A 16 year old was doing 55 in a 35 in a brand new Toyota truck, he hit her brother, t-boned, and he was killed instantly.
It's a shame, it's always the innocent ones who die. Every single time I hear about a fatal wreck on the news, the guy driving like an idiot walks away without a scratch and the innocent people in the other car die. I'd have no problem with 16 year old kids driving like idiots if there was a way to guarantee they're the ones who get killed and the person they hit walks away - natural selection would've removed those idiots from the gene pool by now.
And for everyone else on here who is a young male and doesn't drive like an idiot, you can thank Don here for your sky high insurance rates.

I just hope they manage to keep it as cool and quiet as our current mba 11" (1,6 Ghz C2D)... I prefer quiet computing over ultraspeed in a mba, for shure!

I'm still taken aback by Sun doing what Intel's doing now, but doing it 8-10 years ago. What the heck happened to SUN?

I'm very happy about the gapless playback, and battery life, but generally all these updates are pretty disappointing.
Err, can someone please explain what the fascination is over "gapless playback"?:o
<pretty please>
EDIT:
Opps, I didn't read through the whole thread...

What programs do you consider to be 'forced charity?'
Likely any money spent by the government that he doesn't agree with. ;)

I found this interesting comment on the making waves site - is it true. If it is then the commies at greenpeace need to stop bitching.
Greenpeace appears to have its facts in a muddle. I've studied the environmental performance of the leading companies and here is what I've found.
1. Apple is rated best in class in environmental performance for both portables and desktops by the US Environmental Protection Agency's EPEAT tool (www.EPEAT.net). This tool is based on a 2006 IEEE standard for product environmental performance.
2. In August, Greenpeace conducted extensive tests on leading laptop brands to establish whether or not they were compliant with a European substance ban directive. Apple's laptops were subjected to more than one hundred tests and they were unequivocally found to be RoHS compliant. Note that Greenpeace has subsequently buried this report.
3. Greenpeace found 200 parts per million of TBBA (a harmless brominated flame retardant currently used by all manufacturers) in an Apple fan assembly. TBBA is not banned, and even if it were you would need to quadruple the quantity that was detected in the Apple fan assembly before it reached the European definition of concentration that are permitted for 'banned' substances.
4. HP's laptop failed the compliance test, and Greenpeace ranked HP as the top performer in their August score-card ranking.
5. Despite being ranked at the bottom of Greenpeaces scorecard, Apple is the only manufacturer to have commited to phasing out PVC and TBBA without qualifiers (i.e if economically viable)
6. Apple is the only manufacturer to have eliminated DecaBrome from all plastic parts.
From my research, I can only conclude that Greenpeace is targeting Apple because of the 60 million iPod customers out there. Pity, I used to have a lot of respect for Greenpeace.

If it is a 4 GB iPod, it has to be a Nano, right???
What else, could it be??

You have to link to the images, not the flickr page.
And that's just the U2 special edition iPod.

How about an iPod dock but with an airport express built-in. That way you could either stream video off of your iPod or your Mac. This is important since any device they introduce will have to be both Mac and PC compliant and there is no version of front row currently available for Windows.

Sounds like you'd be interested in a nice Windows7 machine. Enjoy.
Seriously I am an apple fangirl, but this response embarrassed me. If in the future apple start offering 24 and 30 inch models, will you take back this statement.

Surely I'm not the only one who's noticed that the i7 is slower than the i5, and that the Radeon HD 6970M is slower than the 6750M.
Whaaaaa?
The baselines are different when you click the different models. The 6970M is most definitely faster than the 6750M.

Oh god no I hope apple doesn't cave to this kind of Orwellian garbage. I feel for all of the victims of DUIs and know that I have personally called the police on a car that was very obviously had an impaired person behind the wheel but as a non drunk driver if I want to avoid being hassled I should be able to.
You called in a drunk driver? Aren't you the fascist! Who are you to interfere the drunk driver's right to drive recklessly and kill someone? You are a responsible citizen that's what. I imagine you might feel differently about this matter if you ever bothered to console a family who's loved one was killed by a drunk driver. I rarely, if ever, agree with Sens. Reid or Schmer, but here they are dead on. This is not censorship or legislation, this is Senators using the bully pulpit to persuade responsible social action. Bully for them!

I didn't mean to suggest the Conroe as a replacement for the G5 Quad. I was thinking more in line with replacing the duals.
Maybe I misunderstood your post, I thought you meant releasing conroe machines and not shipping quads until months later. If that were the case, people would inevitably compare the new towers to the G5 quads, regardless if they were intended to replace those models.
I think the reason they haven't announced woodcrest towers is because they want to wait for WWDC, and because the line will be split between woodcrest and conroe. It wouldn't make sense to announce half the tower lineup, people would assume that was it and react accordingly.

ok, just made a quick mockup of what i would like to see announced next week
http://users.pandora.be/blackbox/airport_video.png
and make shure it also works with video_ts folders and avi/divx files (maybe via a front row API for third party developers like VLC?) ;)
this would perfectly complement that itunes movie store

Wow, that seems pretty darn reasonable.
I was considering putting a 2.16 Core Duo in my currently Core Solo Mac mini. But now I'd much rather put the 1.83 Core 2 Duo in there for less than $200!

...and SuperCachetes, I was under the impression that US jobs were going out of the country bc we can't afford Union price tags. But if you "think" making labor more expensive will spur hiring, then keep "thinking" that with your "brain" ;)
americanmanufacturing.org (http://americanmanufacturing.org/blog/alliance-american-manufacturing-statement-latest-monthly-job-numbers)
The latest monthly U.S. jobs numbers were released this morning. They showed an increase of 33,000 manufacturing jobs in February. Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 192,000, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 8.9 percent.
Said Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) Executive Director Scott Paul:
"The fact that 33,000 manufacturing jobs were added in February is good news, but we have a long way to go to undo the damage of the recession as well as China's mercantilism over the past decade. There is no doubt that the Obama Administration's rescue plan for our auto sector is playing a role in the growth in manufacturing employment. But, we risk losing these gains unless we can get our trade deficit with China under control. We continue to lose not only factories, but also entire industries, to China. We need to see a much more aggressive stance in Congress and the Administration on China's mercantilist practices."
The U.S. has been losing manufacturing jobs for the last decade not because of Unions but because of the cheap labour that is offered from places like China.

Most likely. I'm not a betting person, but Apple usually rolls out new pro machines during these types of events and what better way to show off the MBPs running C2D than a demonstration of Aperture 2.0. :)

Does anybody think there will be a blu-ray announcement?
I know Sony is running a bit slow, but how great would it be to actually burn your HD Movies onto a Blu-Ray Disc for storage?
I won't hold my breath, but it would be nice.

Multimedia, in the Sept.12th thread, you said:
"I now predict a 50% chance the C2Q Mac will be unveiled tomorrow. And if not tomorrow no later than early November."
I guess that's what people disagreed with (although I haven't finished reading the whole thread yet). I agree with you that it is indeed really big news and I still can't quite wrap my mind around the idea, but I'd be extremely surprised if Apple announces anything Kentsfield later today. (It's already the 12th here in South Korea.)
