I got into a spat with a friend of a friend on Facebook about this. My buddy posted "Hey watch out for a DUI check point [insert location here." To which his friend said "Wow, good job helping drunk drivers get away free. Thats dumb."
Isn't it possible that the heads up provided up this app (and friends, newspapers, etc) may make people who know they will be drinking later in the evening re-think their mode of transportation? Could be saving a life or two.

And Apple's SSDs are sooo awesome right? :rolleyes: About the only thing they really have an edge at is booting up and you can thank Snow Leopard enhancements as much as the SSD for that. For all other tasks...average. The kicker is, you can't even upgrade them to something better/larger down the road...as things currently stand anyway.

It may be difficult but one would hope Apple will bring the iPhone (or whatever it ends up being called) to Japan and other countries if it does in fact launch such a phone initially in the US.

I really wish the media device rumor is true, but i would highly doubt that Apple would bring out the successor to the iPod this early. May be it is a pilot program like the Rockr phone for music on cell phones that Apple wants to experiment with by throwing a media streaming device in the market!
Also, i really wish the movies are priced at $4.99 rather than $9.99!

So we can all assume you also support their haphazard attempts to save the environment, and the fact that they are indeed an incongruent entity with logic, reason, and good taste. They target apple, knowing full well other manufacturers have a generous share of toxic substances in their products (spare us the propeganda greenpeace, we know what LCD's and CRT screens contain).
Greenpeace is the sort that would assume a factory is producing an alarming amount of toxic waste if they happen to spot a dead bird on the roof of the building.

Have anybody seen a benchmark which compares the core 2 duo with the actuall core duo?
I can only see benchmarks between core 2 duo and AMD CPU's and standard dual core Pentium 4 cpu.

I'm hoping for the MPB -still, since around June.

When I go to the apple website, for glossy, it says 5-7 days. If I ordered the MBP, and somehow managed to hold onto it without tearing it open until the 25th, could I really send it in, unopened, for an updated MBP not questions asked?

My cousin's iBook died last winter. I discovered he disposed of it, not sure if he did environmentally-well or not. But since he should've given it to me, even though dead, I had to shoot him. That's one that won't hose the environment anymore!
(this post is partly hyperbole.....no Apple is ever "dead")

Pull them... As trauma surgeon I see the tragedies caused by drunk drivers EVERY Day. Whoever is on agreement to provide means to avoid check points is invited to my local trauma center to see the victims and their families. If we can save one life, one innocent student or parent, even someone who made the mistake of drinking and driving... I would consider this worth.
Besides, the cost of taking care of those who do not die, but spend weeks months or years in the hospital due to a drinking related accident is enormous.
Speed radars are another big issue. In my state, its ok to refuse a helmet while driving a donor-cycle, as we call them, yesterday alone, we lost one kid who is waiting for transplant procurement and half a dozen were admitted with severe injuries most of them traumatic brain injuries while driving motorcycles.
Besides, the cost of taking care of those who do not die, but spend weeks months or years in the hospital due to a drinking related accident is enormous.

Wrong. Cingular is rolling out 3.5G (HSDPA), and although they only have one phone that currently supports it (the LG CU500, http://onlinestorez.cingular.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phones/cell-phones.jsp?RFlow=A&source=INC230056&zip=10010&q_deviceId=cdsku9870167&WT.svl=dtl), reviewers have been wowed by the download speeds and smooth streaming video performance (download speeds are 1.8 Mbps).
All the networks are pretty good when you're the only one using it. As you mentioned, there's only one phone that can even use it now and the reviewers got access probably before most of those were even sold. We'll see how things are 2 years from now. Maybe it'll be great.

I agree with you. if someone is drunk and is still able to operate the app they could be a hazard if they avoid these points.

No they weren't. This has been discussed time and time again here. The word "App" has been used for decades to describe a software Application.
For example "Killer App", or more recently, "Web App" ( Java )
I still have a netscape T-shirt from the mid-to-late 90s with a Mozilla and "Internet's Killer App" on the back .. and Web App .. everyone uses that term (not just java) to describe some sort of pluggable thing into <insert web service> framework .. you could say that Jobs pioneered some of this back at NeXT with Objective C Web Objects .. but that might be a stretch if you ask Booch or the OMG

Only if you buy the machine but don't open the box (unless you're willing to pay a 10% restocking fee). And that's only if you get the standard config, no custom BTO. Plus if you order it, you'll pay shipping back to them.

Looking at some financials, I think Disney sells on the order of 100M DVD units per quarter, which comes out to about 7-10M units per week? 125k units through the online channel in one week isn't so bad. :) If they hit their $50M revenue target, that means they will see sales on the order of 1% of total home video sales? That's a fair start.
And undoubtedly a better margin. I have not seen any concrete numbers, but I had read an article months ago speculating that a studio's margin on digitally distributed movies would be about twice the margin it receives on DVDs.
Plus, for catalog sales, the is almost NO marginal cost; the films just sit on a server until someone buys them.
